Are you looking to get in shape for summer? Are you dreading going on a diet? Let’s be real—starving yourself to lose weight doesn’t work. If you’re like most people, starving yourself ends up backfiring when your willpower breaks, and you binge eat your favorite foods. Even if you do manage to lose weight by starving yourself, you’ll get it back in the long run. It’s not healthy to stay on a diet forever and as soon as you go back to eating normally, you’ll begin to gain weight. So how do you lose the weight?
Eat Smaller Meals Throughout the Day
Most people eat three meals a day. Although meals vary with culture, dinner is usually the largest. Which means you’re dumping the most calories into your body, right before you go to sleep. This really isn’t an effective way to do things.
A better way is to eat several smaller meals throughout the day to help maintain your metabolism. This will also make you feel more energetic and want to exercise more. Be sure that you eat breakfast in the morning, otherwise you’ll overcompensate at lunch or be tempted to snack on junk. There are plenty of healthy breakfast options that will help you stay satisfied and energized in the morning.
Avoid Processed Foods
Processed foods make it more likely that you’ll keep unwanted weight. What is processed food? Processed food is anything that contains additives to make it more shelf-stable, flavorful, or easy to cook. Examples include, microwave dinners, chips, doughnuts, candy, cookies, etc. These foods tend to be packed with calories, high in sugar and sodium, and lacking in nutritional value. They also tend to be quicker to digest, which means your body uses less energy to process them. All in all, processed foods make gaining weight a piece of cake.
Increase Your Exercise
Don’t get too bogged down by all the diet and food talk. For the most part, losing weight boils down to one simple formula: you need to burn more calories than you eat. If you don’t want to eat less calories, then you need to burn more. You can do this by increasing the amount you exercise. Pro tip—don’t start off crazy. Start small and slowly increase.
Increasing your exercise works best if you can find some sort of activity that you really enjoy. If you like running, walking, or jogging, that’s great. If those aren’t for you, try the gym. If none of that sounds good, try joining a recreational sports league or taking dance/Zumba classes.
Losing weight doesn’t have to be a pain. In truth, it should be fun. If you don’t enjoy the changes that you make in your life, you won’t stick to them. Take some time to come up with a plan that you’ll really enjoy.
